But do you really know Jean-Michel Folon?

He was a very versatile artist being drawer, painter, etcher and sculptor. He did illustration work for a great deal of major writers among which Kafka, HG Wells, Prévert, Vian, Borges. He made crafty stained-glass windows and mural paintings such as the one in the Brussels metro station Montgomery.

Being a humanist, he designed posters for humanitarian causes. In 1988 he illustrated the Universal Declaration of Human rights for Amnesty International. It was published in the 6 official UN languages, with a preface from Javier Pérez de Cuellar. In 2003 he became Ambassador for Unicef.

Folon was a known and recognised artist on all continents and galleries and museums from all over the world offered him exhibition space: New York for the first time in 1969 and later in 1990 at the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art, Milan, Paris – the Musée des Arts décoratifs, Rotterdam – Boymans van Beuningen museum, London – Institute of Contemporary Art, Antibes – the Picasso museum, Venice – the Correr museum, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Kyoto, Barcelona, Lausanne...

In 2000, he established the Folon Foundation, which presents his major works from his childhood on a symbolic location.

In 2001, a major exhibition of his sculptures was held in Lisbon and in 2005 Florence was the decor for a retrospective exhibition, which turned out to be huge success.

Jean-Michel Folon died in Monaco on 20 October 2005.

In 2007, the city of Sao Paulo paid tribute to Folon with a major exhibition of his paintings.
