Folklore And Tradition : Carnival

CARNIVAL OF THE BEARS

CARNIVAL OF THE BEARS
© OPT / JL Flemal

The story goes that when Charles Martel, -(brought up in Andenne by his grandmother, St Begge), - killed a terrifying bear at the age of nine with his hammer, the animal became the symbolic animal of the town. It is therefore not surprising that since 1954 it has been the mascot of the Andennes Carnival! Dozens of bears prance along this corso of the Laetare, parading among the floats and the Giant Martin II. Woe betide the imprudent girl who risks being temporarily imprisoned, shaken and pushed in the dreaded "maiden's cage". At the end of the parade, to the children's pleasure and delight, the King and Queen of the Carnival throw hundreds of little bears into the crowd from the balcony of the Town Hall.
