ST. MARTIN'S PROCESSION

ST. MARTIN'S PROCESSION
© Saint Martin d'après une gravure de Henri DIMPRE

Eastern Wallonia is filled with monasteries, churches, and foundations bearing St Martin's name - about which there are many legends. One of these legends tells of the time that St Martin, a soldier, tore his mantle in two with his sword and gave it to a beggar who was dying of cold. Since the sixteenth century on the eve of St Martin, many torchlight processions (often ending in a grand bonfire) pay homage to the Saint, and remind the people of his good deeds.

Procession at 5.30 pm.
