WALK WITH STICK

WALK WITH STICK
© Marche à Bâton

The origins of this walk go back to the 14th century. The monks in their time climbed the flanks of the Mont-Saint-Aubert by way of expiatory pilgrimage. Much later, the local kids went to the "mountain" and cut off branches in the surrounding forests; they made sticks and started peaceful jousts with their wooden weapons. Today this tradition still continues. Every Easter Monday the inhabitants of Tournai do a walk (of 6, 12 or 20 km) to the top of the Mont-Saint-Aubert, everyone at his or her own pace. The mountain is 147 meters high and offers a beautiful compensation to the walkers with its magnificent panoramic view over the entire Escaut valley and over the city in the middle with its cathedral and 5 church-towers.
