CARNIVAL IN MALMEDY - CWARMÊ
© OPT/ JL Flemal

While the four Thursdays preceding Mardi gras see numerous balls and parades, when Saturday "Gras" comes, the "Cwarmê" is officially opened by the "grosse police" who come out to announce the festivities and present the keys of the town to the "Trouv'lê", who will reign in the town until Thursday evening. "Gras", (Fat) Sunday is without a doubt the big day, known for the dance of the "Haguettes", (the principal characters of the Carnival). On Mardi gras the "Mâssis Toûr" takes place: a tour of carnival societies. The burning of he Haguète at the end of the day mark the end of the Cwarmê and the winter. Dance parties in all the bars of the city during the four carnival days.
