By playing with different spaces, by exploiting all the resources offered by lights and colours, and submitting shapes and materials to the will of his pencil, Horta was the precursor of a revolutionary, vibrant and inspired Art Nouveau.
The Brussels scene quickly became a hive of frenzied activity thanks to the contributions made by the colleagues of this visionary, who included Hankar, Strauven, Blérot, the Delune brothers, Cauchie… and many others.

This abbey was founded in 1201 by a noble woman of Brussels named Gisèle, and was entrusted to the nuns of the Cistercian order. The buildings which were badly damaged during the Wars of Religion were rebuilt in the 16th century, and enlarged in the 18th century. Only certain parts of the church still date from the 14th century and belong to that transitional period between the Gothic splendour and the flamboyant (Gardens).

PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION CONTRETYPE - HOTEL HANNON
    © Contretype
It was in 1902 that the engineer Edouard Hannon (1853-1931) called upon his friend, the architect Jules Brunfaut (1852-1942) to build this hotel, a masterpiece in the Art Nouveau style. The furniture was designed by Emile Gallé. The frescoes from the stairwell and the smoking room are the work of the Rouennais painter Paul-Emile Baudouin. The remarkable stained-glass windows are made by Evaldre, disciple of Tiffany's. At the present time, the building, which is the property of the town of Saint-Gilles, is occupied by the Contretype Photographic space which is devoted to the promotion of creative photography by organizing, in particular, exhibitions.

This building, which has been completely renovated, was one of the first radio broadcasting buildings in the world. Inaugurated in 1938, it soon gained quite a reputation for its unique architecture and the unrivalled acoustics of its studios. It was in fact dubbed the 'sound factory'. This highly impressive architectural masterpiece is the work of the Belgian architect from the 1930s, Joseph Diongre.

    WOOD OF LA CAMBRE (IXELLES)

    WOOD OF LA CAMBRE
    © OPT/Joseph Jeanmart
The Wood of La Cambre is a natural extension of the Forest of Soignes in the city. It is one of the most beautiful public parks with a large variety of sights and a maze of trails that are in complete harmony with the site. As you leave Avenue Louise behind you, two toll booths mark the entrance to the woods. In the first part which gives the distinct impression of entering a dense forest, you will come across a ravine, accentuated and covered by a carpet-like lawn. A monumental rock bridge passes majestically over the ravine. The second part extends around an artificial lake with a wooded island and a wide range of plants. While the woods are the ideal place for scenic walks and games, you will also discover that it is a venue for several sporting, cultural and artistic events as well.
