Young, multicultural, artistic and trendy, Ixelles is still one of the liveliest localities in Brussels. In the middle, the Saint-Boniface district, loyal to its good food establishments in unfailingly original settings, borders on the highly colourful Matongé quarter. Farther along, Ixelles' Museums of Architecture and Fine Arts flit non-stop between retrospectives and avant-gardism. And then, right at the bottom end of Ixelles, there's Flagey, the old radio broadcasting centre.

The glass windows of the choir and the transept were made in Baroque style in the first half of the 20th century.

    THE FLAGEY
    © Le Flagey
This 'liner', which has been rechristened the 'Flagey', was saved in June 1998 by a private Belgian group and has now embarked on a new life. This building, which has been completely renovated, was one of the first radio broadcasting buildings in the world. Inaugurated in 1938, it soon gained quite a reputation for its unique architecture and the unrivalled acoustics of its studios. It was in fact dubbed the 'sound factory'. This highly impressive architectural masterpiece is the work of the Belgian architect from the 1930s, Joseph Diongre.
