    ABBEY OF VILLERS-LA-VILLE (VILLERS-LA-VILLE)

    ABBEY OF VILLERS-LA-VILLE
    © Zeppeline.be
The Cistercian Abbey of Villers-la-Ville, which is now in ruins, was founded in 1146 under the impetus of Saint Bernard. This is one of the historical and sightseeing highlights of Wallonia. The building itself is a perfect example of Cistercian architecture. It has all the unadorned simplicity and the standard layout of the monasteries of that particular order. The abbey has a long history. Eight centuries have marked this monument whose main interest lies no doubt in the diversity of architectural styles which are difficult to find in such perfect harmony in the same place. The complex was usually built in the Romanesque style (in particular, a few buildings such as the hôtellerie and the mill), while the other buildings were fashioned in all the splendour of the Gothic style.

    WELLINGTON MUSEUM (WATERLOO)

    WELLINGTON MUSEUM
    © Edit. Thill, S.A., Bruxelles
Waterloo has always been a strategic place because of its location: at the edge of the Soignes Forest, at the gates of Brussels. In the centre of the village you can find the Wellington Museum, a former 18th century coaching inn (listed building) which served as Headquarter for the Duke of Wellington, commander of the allied forces on 17 and 18 June 1815. In an educational way, by means of etches, weapons, documents and illuminated plans, the museum retraces the European political context before and after the battle. You can also follow the different stages of the battle, and in the multimedia room you will learn how the name Waterloo has spread across the world. A multilingual tape guide is available for individuals: the 40 minutes commentary explains the battle in a clear way.
