MUSEUM OF GROESBEECK DE CROIX (NAMUR)

    MUSEUM OF GROESBEECK DE CROIX

The architect Chermanne was commissioned to convert the former Viellers-en-Brabant sanctuary into an elegant town house in the Louis XV style by the Comte du Groesbeeck at the end of the 18th century. It became a museum in 1935, and its marvellously preserved interior contains fine collections of Namur furniture, glassware, ceramics etc. The formal gardens unfortunately did not survive the test of time, but were re-laid at the same time by landscape gardener Hector Mathieu, who gave the garden its former appearance, with the central pond, symmetrical boxwood borders, ring of plane trees, garden pavilion and orangery. Fine flower beds and lawns, a magnificent Virginia tulip tree (planted during the first half of the 19th century) and terracotta sculptures complete this elegant garden.

The museum is located in a mansion in the heart of old Namur, not far from the birthplace of the artist (1833-1898). The main themes of the artist's work are exhibited (women, love, desire and death) tracing his career from his debut as a caricaturist in Brussels to the zenith of his career in Paris. Temporary exhibitions about the 19th century and the art of drawing are organised regularly. The museum also produces numerous publications.
