Some historians claim that both the château and the seigneury derive their name from the unusual appearance of the original building that was covered with slates, also referred to by the old French word "escailles" (scales). The other buildings were thatched. Others suggest that the "escailles" (scales or scallops) featured on the lords' blazon gave rise to the name. The Château de l'Escaille has a U-shaped layout and was built around the late 17th or the early 18th century. At its centre is a small stairway leading up to the entrance doorway. A farm, a shed and a barn, set lengthways and dating from the 18th century, complete the property. The grounds still feature some ornamental constructions, an orangery and a dovecote tower.
