For hundreds of years this forest was made up of beech woods, moors, brooms and heathers, with marshes where willows, cranberries, cotton grass, juniper clearings with birch trees, service trees, bilberries and other indigenous vegetation. In the 13th century the beech woods were over-exploited by the local people for timber for heating and the forge. The forest around knew several owners. A large part of it was acquired by the nation in 1898 and since then it has been subject to the Regime Forestier, a set of regulations for the management of forests belonging to the State, Provinces, local authorities and public bodies which come under state control. In the wake of successive purchases, the National Forest covered nearly 2000 hectares by 1996.
