Thanks to their quick deployment, the 101st Airborne Division, "The Screaming Egles", and the 10th Armored Division, "Tiger", arrived ahead of the 5th Panzer Army. Confronted by determined American resistance, the German units passed Bastogne by the north and the south and continued towards the River Meuse. The town was now surrounded, but the defenders held onto their positions until relieved by Patton's tanks. Patton and his 4th Armored Division managed to break through the German lines and link up with the defenders of the town. The siege of Bastogne was broken. Patton's divisions continued their advance in the direction of Houffalize where they linked up with units of General Hodges.
