This festival has its roots in the many medieval legends from the olden days. The cortège leaves in front of the Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée, rue des Sables, (around 2 pm). The tree is part of this cortège which includes the Giants of Brussels, the "Roue de la fortune" and a cavalcade headed by a Charles V. They march to the Grand Place and then return to the corner of the Rue des Sables with the Rue des Marais. The tree must be planted before 5 pm! The Meyboom festivities continue until late at night. The famous Carpet of Flowers covers 300 m² right in the centre of the Grand Place. This year, it's a traditional carpet: end of the Middle Ages. With a different design each time, it is the work of flower growers from Ghent, the great specialists in growing begonias. These flowers offer a wide range of vivid and glowing colours and easily resist the burning sun. After all, the craftsmen assemble them directly on the cobble-stones of the square without a layer of soil.
